England's neighbourhoods, mapped from official statistics

Balworth paints all 32,844 neighbourhoods in England — Lower Layer Super Output Areas on 2011 boundaries — from published official statistics. Each colour ranks an area of about 1,500 people against every other area in England, in tenths: green ranks better, rose ranks worse. No figure on Balworth is calculated for a single street or address.

The layers

• Deprivation — the Indices of Deprivation 2025 and 2019 from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, overall and across all seven domains: income, employment, education, health, crime, barriers to housing and services, and living environment.
• Crime severity — twelve rolling months of street-level records from data.police.uk, weighted by how seriously the courts treat each offence, so one robbery counts far more than one shoplifting. Recorded crime is crime reported to and recorded by police, not crime committed.
• House prices — the median price actually paid in each neighbourhood, from HM Land Registry via the ONS, alongside affordability against local earnings.
• Community — Census 2021 at full resolution: age, household composition, faith, country of birth, qualifications and tenure.
• Air and traffic — modelled background concentrations of fine particles from Defra, and road traffic counts from the Department for Transport.
• Places — 77,000+ stations, schools, GP surgeries, supermarkets, parks and more, from OpenStreetMap.
